Background Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) constitute a large family of RNA binding proteins that play multiple roles in RNA metabolism. HNRNPA1, one of major hnRNPs, is a DNA/RNA binding protein located primarily in nucleoplasm and shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm. HNRNPA1 is involved in transcription, splicing, stability, export, translation and miRNA biogenesis. The changes in expression levels of HNRNPA1 have been reported in various cancers and neurodegenerative diseases.
