Background ETF1, also known as eRF1, is a polypeptide chain release factor required for the termination of translation. eRF1-eRF3 heterodimer mediates translation termination and ribosome release through direct binding to stop codon in the ribosomal A-site. eRF1 is also involved in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay as a component of SURF (SMG1-UPF1-eRF1-eRF3) complex.
