| Background | DNA methylation is one of many critical epigenetic modifications. In most cases, cytosine (C) in DNA sequence is converted to 5-methylcytosine (5mC) with addition of a methyl group by the enzymatic activity of DNA methyltransferase. DNA methylation plays a role in the regulation of gene expression. It has been reported that abnormal DNA methylation level is involved in many diseases.
5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), a newly identified epigenetic modification following 5mC, is generated from oxidation of 5mC by the enzymatic activity of TET family proteins. 5hmC may function as a regulator of gene expression as well as 5mC. |
