Background The receptor of IL-18 belongs to IL-1R family, and is a complex of two polypeptide chains, IL-18 receptor 1 (IL-18R1/IL-18Ra/CD218a) and IL-18 receptor accessory protein (IL-18Rap/IL-18 receptor b/CD218b). Both chains are thought to be essential for IL-18-mediated signaling. IL-18R1 is a glycosylated membrane protein of 60-100 kDa, and widely distributed in cells including Th1 cells, NK cells, renal epithelial cells, and airway epithelial cells and airway smooth muscle cells of patients with fatal asthma and mild asthma. It is also expressed in human cancers such as prostate cancers, colonic tumors, and leukemia cells.
